Tonga ranks 104 out of 189 on the Human Development Index (HDI). CARE International’s most recent work in Tonga has been in support of the volcano eruption response.

History of CARE International’s work in Tonga 

CARE International has been working in Tonga through partners since 2017.  

More recently, CARE International has been supporting Tonga through our response to the volcano eruption in the beginning of 2022. The eruption led to an ash cloud blanketing much of the country, causing water and air pollution. Flooding from tsunami waves caused further devastation to homes and infrastructure.
