The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) ranks 88 out of 189 on the Human Development Index (HDI). CARE International’s work in the DRC has focused on supporting Rwandan refugees, responding to the Ebola crisis, and assisting vulnerable groups.

History of CARE International's work in The Democratic Republic of the Congo

CARE International started work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) started in 1979. In the 1990s, CARE International's work primarily supported Rwandan refugees fleeing into the country. CARE International returned to the DRC in 2002, initially focusing on helping those affected by long-standing conflict.

In 2018, the Ministry of Health in the DRC declared a new outbreak of Ebola. CARE DRC's response has included assisting homes, communities, and health centers with water, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as through risk communication and community engagement.

Beyond our Ebola response, CARE International's work today in the DRC focuses on: 

In the DRC, CARE International has strengthened its structure and strategy to assist the Congolese society achieve victories over widespread poverty and reduce social injustice. We work mainly with poor women, adolescent girls and boys, and displaced and returning populations.
