Data, strategy, partnerships, and a focus on women and girls drive our mission to save lives and defeat poverty.
Over 1 billion people live in poverty today. Many are caught in war zones
– conflict areas have doubled in recent years. At the same time, human
action has led to an increase in extreme weather events, such as floods and
droughts.
Inequality is also rising, especially for women and girls. It will now take
137 years to achieve equality between women and men and girls and boys.
Behind every number is a real person, whose dreams and potential are
being stripped by a complex, devastating reality that they often have limited
power to alter. Changing is not easy – but it’s possible.
At CARE, we achieve change through carefully designed aid programs
that are informed by our decades of experience working with
communities and meet the highest international standards. Scroll down to
see what they are.
All our work is based on evidence, local partnerships, and a strong focus
on both urgent needs and long-term change – with women and girls at the
center.
Meeting urgent needs—and tackling root causes
CARE and our partners’ priority is to help with the most urgent needs – whether it is food, shelter, safety, healthcare, or education.
But we also want to help end what caused these needs in the first place.
We believe that inequality of one form or another is what creates and perpetuates poverty.
So we work to help create a world where everyone can access resources
and opportunities, including education, jobs, healthcare, healthy food, and
more. This makes for a fairer society, where everyone has the power and
the opportunities to change their lives for the better.
Partnering for change
Local people and organizations know their communities best. They tell us
what is needed—more water, a health clinic, or training to start a small
business. We listen and act together.
We combine their knowledge with CARE’s 80 years of experience and
expertise fighting poverty and inequality, as well as our global presence and
networks.
CARE prioritizes women’s organizations because women are usually
missing from decision-making tables, which means their rights, needs, and
interests tend to get overlooked. We help change that.
