Côte d’Ivoire

CARE started work in: 2000

CARE and partners work in Côte d’Ivoire to increase access to health services, boost equality for women and girls, and help communities adapt to climate change.

CARE International’s history in Côte d’Ivoire

CARE began working in Côte d’Ivoire in 2000 during a period of political unrest and civil conflict. Early efforts focused on humanitarian response, including emergency food assistance, access to safe drinking water, basic health support, and assistance to displaced communities.

As conditions stabilized, we expanded our work to address poverty and limited access to essential services. Today, CARE Côte d’Ivoire works with government institutions, civil society organizations, and community groups to support locally led programs that increase opportunities for women, girls, and young people.

CARE and partners’ work in Côte d’Ivoire

CARE Côte d’Ivoire and our partners support long-term development while maintaining the ability to respond to humanitarian needs when crises arise.

Our work focuses on:

Making the economy work for women

CARE and our partners support women farmers and entrepreneurs to increase incomes and savings. Through Village Savings and Loan Associations, women gain access to small loans, build financial skills, and strengthen their participation in local economies, particularly in cocoa-growing communities.

Health

We work with communities and partners to improve access to essential health services and information for women, children, and families.

Climate

CARE supports farming communities to restore degraded land, improve farming practices, and manage forests more sustainably. These efforts help protect local ecosystems while supporting community livelihoods.

Crisis response

We stand ready to provide emergency aid in case of instability or crises.

CARE works closely with local organizations and community groups to ensure programs fit local priorities and strengthen long-term capacity.

Focus on women and girls

Women and girls are at the centre of CARE Côte d’Ivoire’s work.

CARE partners with women-led and women-majority organizations, associations, and savings groups to ensure women play leadership roles in economic, social, and community initiatives.

CARE and our partners support women and girls to:

  • Strengthen economic independence and access financial services
  • Take on leadership roles in their communities
  • Improve health and well-being for themselves and their families
  • Adapt to climate and economic challenges

By supporting women’s leadership and economic participation, CARE works with women and girls to help strengthen families and communities across Côte d’Ivoire.
