CARE Türkiye staff member confirmed deceased in wake of Türkiye-Syria earthquake

Gaziantep, Feb 7th, 2023 - It is with the deepest sadness CARE learned today of the passing of one of our CARE Türkiye colleagues, in the wake of the devastating earthquake that has shaken the region. Anas Sweid, a member of CARE’s operations team, along with his wife and daughter, has been confirmed deceased after the collapse of their residential building in the city of Hatay. Anas’ son was found alive.

Anas, who worked to support CARE’s efforts in Northern Syria, was deeply committed to the people he served. He will be sorely missed by all of us, but fondly remembered always. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues.

Our thoughts and solidarity also go out to the thousands of families impacted by this disaster in both Türkiye and Syria - including members of our staff who provide humanitarian relief under these adverse conditions.

CARE is committed to honoring Anas’ memory by continuing to support the victims of this tragedy with the same dedication and diligence Anas brought to his role.
