CARE International’s history in Japan
In the late 40s, Japanese people were reeling from World War II’s devastating impacts. There was widespread hunger and need.
At the time, CARE had recently been founded in the United States to provide post-war aid. The organization began sending emergency relief in the form of CARE Packages.
From 1948 to 1956, 10 million people received food aid and basic supplies in the form of CARE PACKAGE® boxes.
Thanks to the communities’ hard work and international support, Japan gradually recovered from the war’s devastating impact. In time, the country was able to help others facing similar challenges around the world.
In May 1987, CARE International Japan was founded. To this day, it continues to support communities facing crises as the country experienced in the past.
CARE International Japan’s work today
CARE Japan works alongside partners and communities to fight poverty — as part of the CARE International Confederation — particularly in Asia. The organization focuses on gender equality, making the economy work for women, education, and skills.
Some of the flagship programs include:
- Atsabe Rural Development Project for Improvement of Livelihoods in the Ermera District, Timor Leste. The project focuses on women's empowerment, agriculture, and access to markets.
- Educational Support Project for Refugee Children from Myanmar in Thailand. Implemented in partnership with Raks Thai (CARE Thailand), it focuses on providing safe learning spaces for girls and boys forced to flee their homes.
- Project for Improving Girls' Education and Health and Sanitation in Rural Areas, Nepal. The initiative focuses on increasing children's motivation to learn by renovating school buildings. It also raises awareness on issues related to health, hygiene, and equality between women and men, girls and boys.
