CARE has two offices in Belgium: CARE International aisbl and CARE Belgium. Learn more about them below.
CARE International’s work in Belgium
CARE International aisbl is part of CARE’s Secretariat and focuses on representing and supporting the Confederation’s engagement with the European Union (EU). It influences EU policies in line with our global priorities and in coordination with CARE International Members and Country Offices.
CARE International aisbl is also the registered parent of many CARE International country offices located in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. It runs them in close coordination with CARE International Members.
CARE Belgium helps to fight poverty across the world through fundraising, advocacy, communication, and technical support to implement programs. Learn more about it below.
CARE Belgium’s history
CARE Belgium was founded in 2014 to contribute to CARE International Confederation’s mission to fight poverty and inequality across the world.
CARE Belgium’s work today
CARE Belgium works with partners globally to help create a more equal and just future for all people. Along with all the CARE International Confederation, we focus on women and girls because they suffer disproportionate impacts during crises, yet have unique potential to lead change.
Our key areas of work are:
- Empowering women and girls
- Fighting climate change
- Providing emergency humanitarian aid
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), for example, we are working with farmers in the Kasai Oriental province to improve their living conditions, particularly food security, by:
- Developing sustainable farming practices, that reduce climate change impacts
- Improve financial skills to better manage their assets and production
- Increase gender equality by promoting women’s leadership and combatting gender-based violence.
To achieve this, CARE Belgium focuses on several complementary areas: climate resilience and sustainable development, gender equality, and community training to bring about sustainable change.
Work in Belgium
Alongside its international projects, CARE Belgium also runs national initiatives.
Although young people in the country have access to education and the media, awareness of global issues (climate change, global inequalities, migration, human rights) remains fragmented and often absent from the school curriculum.
We help address this issue by introducing Global Citizenship Education (GCE). GCE raises students’ awareness of global issues and familiarizes them with the SDGs through participatory workshops and interactive sessions.
CARE Belgium also organizes advocacy events, including the “Climate Change is Sexist” conference. Building on CARE's global campaign, the advocacy event highlights the impact climate change already has on existing gender inequalities.
