Web Update: crisis in the South of Chad

Overview

The recent clashes between the armed forces that took place at the end of 2017 in north-west of Central Africa Republic (CAR) resulted in a large influx of African refugees in southern Chad. About 22 000 refugees were welcome in the villages of the departments of the Nya-Penda, the mountains of Lam in the region of the Oriental logone and the Barh Sara in the region of Mandoul. The urgency has been triggered by the UNHCR since then and some response actions have been carried out by them and their partners as well as other organizations such as WFP, ICAH, UNICEF, MSF. But the situation still remains worrying with the country already facing crisis in the East, in the Lac Chad region and food insecurity.

The Need

The number of people in need of assistance is increasing by thousands every week. 29.2% of the new arrivals have specific needs. The majority of refugees are women and children who are increasingly exposed to Gender Based Violence (GBV) and other diseases. Currently, more than 4000 refugees are relocated to the Doholo and Dosseye camps and biometric registration operations are underway. Awareness raising sessions for the relocations are undergoing. Important gaps in the area of WASH, protection and Reproductive Health, education, shelter and food security need to be filled.

What is CARE Doing?

CARE conducted a rapid assessment in the areas affected by the CAR refugeeā€™s influx with the support of the Regional Humanitarian Coordinator (RHC) to appreciate the level of the humanitarian situation of the field and analyze the CARE added value in this crisis. As part of the coordination mechanism in the affected areas, CARE participated in the food security assessment conducted by WFP and FAO.

CARE has also conducted a rapid gender assessment to analyze how the crisis affected different people and particularly the impact of the crisis on women, girls and children to be able to plan adequately the response to the specific identified needs. CARE received the approval of ERF and hired temporary Emergency Team Leader and Media communication expert to ensure appropriate and quality response as well as good level of fund mobilization.
