CARE Malawi Receives Consignment of ECHO-funden Shelter Kits for 2000 Flood Affected Families in Nsanje

Lilongwe, 27 March 2015 - CARE Malawi Country Director, Michael Rewald and other dignitaries including Mrs. Maria Winnubst of the European Commission on behalf of the donor and Principal Secretary for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Stuart Ligomeka, on behalf of the Government of Malawi, were on hand today at Kamuzu International Airport to receive a consignment of 2000 shelter kits destined for flood affected families in Nsanje District, in the Southern Region of the country.

Shelters to Improve Living Conditions of Most Vulnerable Flood Victims

The kits are a first installment of shelter and non-food items being procured by CARE with a €200,000 grant from the Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department of the European Commission (ECHO) to ensure that most vulnerable among the flood affected families have dignified temporary shelter as they begin to rebuild their lives after the devastation of the floods.

CARE is working with the Government of Malawi and in coordination with the Shelter Cluster at national and district levels to ensure that the shelter kits are provided to 2000 of the families most in need in Nsanje District, who will also benefit from training in shelter construction.

In his remarks, CARE Malawi Country Director, Michael Rewald thanked the European Commission for its support to the relief effort and reiterated CARE’s commitment to continue to support the Government of Malawi in its efforts to meet the needs of the families affected by the floods.

To date, CARE has raised more than US $1.1 million in cash and in-kind contributions to the relief effort which began in January 2015 in the aftermath of the floods that caused extensive damage to several communities and displaced as many as 173,000 people in 15 districts. CARE has provided relief aid to 21,214 households (about 116,000 men, women and children) in 4 districts – Nsanje, Ntcheu, Machinga and Salima. An additional 90,000 individuals in Ntcheu, Mulanje and Balaka will benefit from 18 Emergency Reproductive Health kits donated by CARE to the Ministry of Health.

In its response strategy, CARE prioritizes the most vulnerable flood affected families such as child- and female-headed households; families caring for persons with disabilities, the elderly and the chronically ill; and households with pregnant and lactating women and/or children under the age of 5.
