HAITI (January 13, 2010) – A massive earthquake has hit Haiti. Help is urgently needed for the hundreds of thousands likely affected by the disaster, especially for the most vulnerable - women and girls.
CARE has approximately 100 personnel already on the ground, working on projects throughout Haiti. CARE is immediately dispatching an emergency team from Canada.
The 7.0 earthquake struck near the capital and is reported to have created devastating damage. Communications have been significantly damaged in the disaster, but there is no doubt that the needs will be urgent. Initial reports are that many buildings, including essential services like hospitals, have been destroyed meaning this disaster may become a major catastrophe. Because of their special needs, and the fact they are often less able to flee, women and girls are usually the most vulnerable in emergencies, and will require immediate assistance. As in all disasters, the immediate needs will likely include clean water, shelter, food and medical aid. From CARE's experience in other emergencies, we know mothers with infants and pregnant women will need special supplies and health care.
CARE began working in Haiti in 1954 to provide relief assistance after Hurricane Hazel. Our work shifted to development programming in 1959, with a focus on maternal and child nutrition. Today CARE's work in Haiti reflects an integrated approach, with projects in HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, maternal and child health, education, food security, and water and sanitation.
