CARE distributes tents, food and hygiene items March 5, 2010. „Six days after the earthquake struck Chile, there are still some regions that have not received aid yet“, says Axel Rottländer, deputy emergency coordinator of CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg. Rottländer, who arrived in the region around Concepcion two days ago, reports from the village of Sauzal: „Out of 141 houses only 36 are still standing. There is no electricity, no water. People are afraid of aftershocks and do not want to stay in the houses that have not been damaged. So they stay out in the open.“ CARE focuses its emergency relief on remote areas. About 200 families in Sauzal will receive staple food such as rice, sugar and noodles. CARE has already ordered tents. In addition, disinfectant for toilets, tooth paste and brushes, soap, towels, detergent and diapers are needed. “There is simply nothing left here”, says Rottländer. “Everything is needed.” For media requests call: Sandra Bulling (in Germany)
