Essential food items will be distributed today to both areas.
CARE is preparing to scale up its response and in the coming days will provide assistance to another 50,000 people in the Irrawaddy Delta.
While the immediate needs are basic shelter, food and water, the rehabilitation of the affected areas in Myanmar will continue for months if not years.
Reports from Myanmar suggest that rice stocks and seeds for the current planting season may have been lost; raising concerns about the impact this will have on the country’s long-term recovery.
‘The magnitude of this disaster requires a plan that goes beyond immediate emergency response,’ says Jonathan Mitchell, CARE's Emergency Director.
‘CARE recognizes the complexities of the situation and as an aid organisation our sole focus is on the people we’re there to help,’ says Jonathan Mitchell.
