• As of April 2nd, CARE has reached close to 314,500 people to date with distributions of food, PUR® water pu rification packets, potable water supplies, jerry cans, hygiene kits, shelter kits, mattresses, blankets, newborn kits and clean delivery kits.
• A breakdown of CARE’s distributions thus far include:
o Food distributions to 119,891 individuals;
o Water and sanitation services, including PUR water purification packets, water storage bladders, potable water and latrine construction to 42,197 people;
o A total of 97,140 non-food items such as hygiene kits that place a special focus on the needs of women, tarps, tents mattresses, blankets and jerry cans for water storage;
o Health-related supplies such as kits that contain soap, blankets and items to help women provide basic hygiene for their children, clean delivery kits for expectant mothers and newborn kits to 1,534 women; and
o Condoms to 5,145 adults.
• In collaboration with the department of agriculture, CARE will begin cash-for-work activities in Léogâne soon. Currently the process of identifying participants is underway. Candidates will work each day for the next 9 months on projects such as: clearing debris from canals and roads; soil conservation; water retention; and planting of trees to prevent soil erosion.
• CARE has completed the installation of 425 latrines in Carrefour and Léogâne and four showers, benefitting a population of 42,197. In all, we will construct 3,000 latrines with hand-washing stations to meet basic sanitation requirements. We have also purchased 10 vacuum tanks to help with removal of human waste from sites where it’s not possible to install emergency trench latrines. To help minimize the spread of disease, CARE has trained a number of sanitation committees in various sites and provided each committee with tools to clean their sites.
• CARE has formed a partnership with International Medical Corps (IMC) to provide healthcare for abused and pregnant women and girls.
• A container of 3,500 kitchen sets has arrived and will be distributed.
• CARE has been selected to chair the UN’s shelter cluster hub in Carrefour, coordinating with the municipalities. The team worked with architects and residents to finalize an illustrated outreach poster on principles of hazard-resistant construction, including options for models that can be easily adjusted to accommodate needs for privacy and space, and material restrictions. CARE will print 30,000 posters initially and distribute them in camps.
• Working closely with UNIFEM, CARE continues to develop our women’s center concept for Léogâne, which will include a community-based psychosocial program for male and female youth. Activities will include art and sports and the centers will mainly provide information, rather than services. Advice on family planning, counseling for trauma survivors and cultural messages via dance, theater and sports will be provided. In conjunction with these centers, CARE’s partner, IMC, will provide medical services via mobile clinics.
• CARE trained 800 parents in psychosocial support and treatment for children and adolescents who have experienced trauma in Pétionville, Léogâne and Carrefour. Once trained, they will form “parent clubs” and provide support on a voluntary basis. We will also distribute 8,000 recreation kits to provide children with a renewed sense of childhood.
