CARE and Climate Change

CARE seeks a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and people live in dignity and security. Climate change poses the single greatest threat in history to achieving our vision. The impacts of climate change are already destroying livelihoods and aggravating financial, political, social and environmental inequities. Without urgent action, this could make it impossible for poor and marginalised people to reach a wide range of development and justice goals.

There is still time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and prevent human suffering on an unprecedented scale, but we haven't a moment to lose.

CARE's response to climate change is rapidly growing to reflect the scope and severity of the challenge. Our overarching objectives are to empower poor and marginalised people to take action on climate change at all levels and to build knowledge for global change.

In keeping with our core poverty-fighting mission, CARE is pursuing these objectives through the following strategic themes: global policy engagement, adaptation, making carbon finance work for the poor and organisational change. We emphasise social justice, gender equality and empowerment in everything we do. Read more here.

CARE at COP15

At COP 15, CARE International will work towards mobilising the much needed political will to seal a fair, ambitious and binding deal that puts especially vulnerable people at the centre of the world's response to climate change. Such a deal should include a commitment to deep cuts in emissions and strong adaptation and REDD provisions. It much also address the needs and rights of especially vulnerable people and ensure their active and meaningful participation at all levels of decision-making.

To this end, one area CARE will focus on is to bring Southern Voices to the negotiations through a project that ensures that the needs, perspectives and positions of people, and civil society organisations in developing countries are actively advocated for in the international climate negotiations leading up to COP 15 and at the event, with a specific focus on climate change adaptation and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD). The project also creates national networks on climate change and forestry, and creates useful links between civil society and national governments.
