·         CARE recently received 12,000 dignity kits from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). These kits contain soaps, blankets and other items to help women provide basic hygiene for their children and will be distributed in the coming weeks.

·         A CARE health specialist from Atlanta is traveling to Haiti to assess reproductive health needs in Léogâne, with specific focus on reproductive health and the prevention of gender-based violence. “In the short-term, we need to make confidential clinical services available to treat survivors of rape, including psychosocial support and security. Women need to know where they can get these services. At the same time we must do all we can to prevent it. Sexual violence was a problem in Haiti before the earthquake and we know it increases in these types of situations,” said Janet Meyers, senior advisor for sexual and reproductive health in emergencies.
