CARE International has launched an emergency operation to provide assistance to the people of Haiti, hit by a dramatic earthquake.

On the afternoon of January 12, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti with its epicentre just 10 miles south of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Today, more than 3.7 million survivors continue to struggle to meet their families’ daily needs. The death toll is an estimated 222,570, similar in scope to the South Asia tsunami of 2004, where approximately 226,000 people died. In addition, 300,000 survivors were injured and as many as 1.3 million men, women and children were displaced from their homes and communities. Most displaced families continue to live in spontaneous settlements – makeshift communities with minimal privacy or facilities and lack of basic services such as healthcare and education.

CARE has launched a $40 million appeal for a five-year emergency relief and rehabilitation programme for the affected population. Read more about CARE's Haiti Earthquake Response.

As of April 2nd, CARE had reached close to 314,500 people to date with distributions of food, PUR® water pu rification packets, potable water supplies, jerry cans, hygiene kits, shelter kits, mattresses, blankets, newborn kits and clean delivery kits . CARE’s experience in Haiti spans decades, beginning in 1954. When the earthquake hit, we were already implementing successful development programs and immediately shifted our focus to respond to the emergency and help survivors. In Haiti, CARE staff includes emergency personnel who were part of the response to the devastating Hurricane Hanna in 2008.  We have also nearly doubled the size of our staff since the quake with 70 national staff and an experienced emergency team.

Today CARE's work in Haiti includes projects in HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, maternal and child health, education, food security, and water and sanitation. Read our Haiti country factsheet.
