Geneva, May 20, 2011. CARE International, a leading humanitarian organization, today launched its Annual Report for Financial Year 2010. The report provides a snapshot of CARE’s programs and the impact of CARE’s work. CARE International focuses on fighting poverty by empowering women and girls. “CARE is convinced that once we equip women and girls with the proper resources, they have the power to help families and entire communities to escape poverty,” says Dr. Robert Glasser, CARE International’s Secretary General.  “Our more than 65 years of experience around the world has taught us that empowering women leads to improved health and opportunities for them, their families, and their communities.”

In FY10 CARE worked in 87 countries, supporting 905 poverty-fighting projects that reached an estimated 82 million people. CARE employed more than 11,500 staff, 97 percent of whom are citizens of the countries where they work. In fiscal year 2010, CARE increased its commitment to strengthen advocacy. Its new global advocacy strategy focuses on four main themes: women and food security; women, peace and security; women and climate change; and maternal health.

CARE’s total expense in FY10 were 580 million EUR (804 million USD). CARE received funding from a wide range of institutional donors, such as government donor agencies, multilateral organizations including the United Nations, the World Bank, the Global Fund and the European Union. In addition, CARE was strongly supported by corporate and individual donors from around the world.

In 2010 CARE prepared to welcome CAREs India and Peru into the CARE confederation as affiliate members. “We are thrilled at the prospect of CARE India and CARE Peru soon becoming affiliate members of the confederation and look forward to the dynamic contributions they will make to our global diversity and the fight against poverty,” Glasser says.

CARE International is a leading global confederation of 12 independent nonpolitical, non-religious humanitarian organizations working together to fight poverty and provide assistance in humanitarian emergencies. CARE was originally established in 1945 as part of an international network bringing emergency relief to the people of war-torn Europe. The first CARE packages reached Le Havre, France, on May 11, 1946. Some 100 million more CARE packages reached people in need during the next two decades.
